One of the small things you have to figure out after moving somewhere new is where your family actually likes to eat. Not just where the food is good. Where can the kids move around a little? Where can everyone find something they’ll eat? Where can you go without feeling like you need to keep everyone perfectly quiet for an hour?

Greenville has plenty of places that make eating out with kids a little easier.

Here are a few worth trying as you get to know the area.

HeyDay Sandwiches and Cocktails

HeyDay is one of those places that feels family-friendly without feeling like a “kids restaurant.”

They’ve got sandwiches, burgers, snacks, milkshakes, and a full kids menu, but a lot of the appeal is what’s happening outside.

There’s a big turf lawn, an outdoor stage, live music, and seasonal events like summer movie nights. They also keep things like building blocks and simple toys out on the green to encourage kids to play together.

You’ll often see families bring toddler bikes, lawn toys, or other things for the kids to enjoy while everyone hangs out.

That’s what makes HeyDay work so well for families. Dinner doesn’t have to mean asking the kids to sit still the entire time. They can move around, play, and make a few friends while the adults get to relax a little too.

You’ll find HeyDay on Poinsett Highway, which also makes it an easy stop if you’re heading toward Travelers Rest or exploring the north side of Greenville.

Gather GVL

Gather is one of our favorite options when everyone in the family wants something different.

It’s an open-air food hall made from repurposed shipping containers, with a big central courtyard, turf, communal seating, and plenty of covered areas. It feels much more like a place to hang out than a traditional sit-down restaurant.

There are 13 different food and drink concepts, so one kid can get pizza, another can grab a burger, and the adults can go in a completely different direction. You’ll find everything from HenDough’s fried chicken and doughnuts and Saki Saki’s sushi to Mercado Cantina, KO Burger, Cocobowlz, and plenty more.

It’s also dog-friendly, so the family dog can come along too. Gather regularly has live music and other events, and the open setup gives kids a little more freedom to move around while everyone eats.

And the location is hard to beat. Gather is on Augusta Street, just a few steps from Fluor Field and not far from the rest of downtown Greenville. It’s an easy place to build into a bigger family outing.

Swamp Rabbit Cafe & Grocery

Swamp Rabbit Cafe & Grocery is one of those Greenville places that’s worth knowing about pretty quickly.

It’s part cafe, part grocery, part bakery, and part local gathering spot. You can grab pizza, sandwiches, baked goods, coffee, or something from the market, then hang out outside for a while.

For families, one of the best parts is the outdoor kids’ play area. It has more of a nature-play feel than a traditional playground, with things kids can build with, lots of toy cars and ride-on toys, and plenty of room to explore.

One Greenville-parent tip: because the play area is outside, it can get pretty muddy after it rains. If the weather’s been wet, this might be a good day for the play clothes and shoes you don’t mind getting dirty.

Swamp Rabbit Cafe is also right off the Swamp Rabbit Trail, so a stop here can easily turn into a bigger family outing. Grab something to eat, let the kids play for a while, then walk or bike part of the trail.

It’s casual, easy, and one of those places where the kids actually have something to do while everyone hangs out.

TReehouse Cafe & Studio

TReehouse Cafe & Studio in Travelers Rest is a little different from the other places on this list because the creative part is built right into the experience.

It’s part cafe and part art studio, with sandwiches, sides, coffee, treats, and art activities for kids and families. There are toys, coloring supplies, painting projects, crafts, and even art teachers available to help with projects you can purchase in the studio.

There are also free art supplies available for doodling and creating, while bigger projects like canvases or other crafts can be purchased if your kids want to make something to take home.

That makes it a particularly nice option on a rainy day or anytime you want lunch to come with an activity already built in.

And because it’s right on Main Street in Travelers Rest, you can walk around downtown or hop over to the Swamp Rabbit Trail when you’re done.

Southernside Brewing Co.

Southernside Brewing Co. is a really easy place to turn dinner into something more than just dinner.

They’ve got bowling lanes, video arcade games, a big outdoor area, and live music, so there’s plenty to do besides sit at the table. The outdoor space also gives kids room to move around while everyone hangs out.

And the location is a big plus. Southernside sits right off the Swamp Rabbit Trail next to Unity Park, so you can easily pair it with a bike ride, a walk, or some time at the park before or after you eat.

If your family likes places where you can eat, play, and stay for a while, this is one worth knowing about.

Other Lands

Other Lands is one of those places that gives families a little more flexibility than a normal sit-down restaurant.

It’s a coffee house and brewery on Rutherford Road with food throughout the day, a patio, and a fenced kids area with climbing structures, toys, and playhouses. They also have board and card games for older kids.

They keep a pretty active weekly calendar, too. There’s a recurring trivia night for the grown-ups, plus a Saturday kids activity with things like crafts, snacks, and other simple activities for children.

That combination makes it an easy place to hang out for a while. The kids have something to do, the adults don’t have to rush through the meal, and there’s often something extra happening while you’re there.

A Few More Worth Trying

These definitely aren’t the only places around Greenville that work well with kids.

You could also check out The Mill at Fountain Inn, Warehouse at Vaughn’s, D’Allesandro’s Pizza, or Sidewall Pizza in Travelers Rest.

The nice thing about Greenville is that “kid-friendly” doesn’t always have to mean chicken nuggets and a plastic playground. Sometimes it just means there’s room to move, plenty of food choices, something interesting nearby, or a place where nobody minds if your kids act like kids.

And when you’re new to town, finding a few places like that can make family dinner a whole lot easier.
